Andrin Schmid

I am a PhD candidate in Mechanical Engineering at MIT, working in the Mechanosynthesis Group with Prof. John Hart. My research is on molded soft magnetic composites for electric motors and manufacturing in general including LPBF 3D printing. Before MIT I did my BSc and MSc at ETH Zurich, where I also worked at the Student Project House, the university’s main makerspace. I got into making by building autonomous underwater vehicles and later built several of my own 3D printers, including SLA and SLS machines with custom PCBs and firmware.

Use of AI

I use AI (Claude Opus 5.5) to grammar check the texts on all pages, since English is not my first language. I review every change the AI suggests, so that my wording and my intentions stay the same and only the spelling and grammar get corrected. Where AI was used for more than that, it is written in the “AI use” note at the end of the page. Everything else, the designs, code, measurements and fabrication, is my own work.
