Week 1

Final Project Sketch and CAD

← Back to home page

Overview

This week's assignment was to sketch a possible final project and start modeling it in CAD. My final project is the Marble Musician, a marble-driven music player. A computer releases marbles as directed by a song (likely a MIDI file), and each marble falls and strikes its matching chime. The marbles are then caught in a padded basin and carried back to the top by a lift, ready to play another note.

For more details on the project and how it has developed since, see the Final Project page.

Sketch

I started by sketching out the project on a sketchpad.

Modeling in Fusion 360

I started with the base and the vertical column that everything else mounts to.

Next I added the bowl and the row of guide fins across the top. The guides hold the marbles as they wait to be released onto the chimes below, and the bowl catches them after they play.

Then came the pipes that the marbles strike. The actual number and type of chimes will change as the design evolves.

Finally, I modeled the lift that carries the marbles back up to the top.
