A.K.A Low-level programmer touches webdev for the first time in 6 years

Starting the blog

I never properly created a website in my life. Making a Static Site Generator (SSG) for HTMAA will be the first time that I am properly making a website that contains more than 4 lines of HTML in about 6 years.

My first programming language was C++ and my second was Python. As of this blog post, I primarly code in the above to languages as well as Rust and Dafny. The last time I made a webpage was using the Flask module in Python using Jinja as the template engine.

Choosing an SSG

In the zeroth lecture1 of HTMAA, Niel briefly mentions that we will need to make a website for HTMAA. In the zeroth recitation of HTMAA, we talk about Git as well as how to make websites to host our documentation.

In that presentation, two SSG frameworks are mentioned: Jekyll and Hugo

  1. I think the initial introductory lecture counts as zeroth lecture not just because I’m a computer scientist and like to count from zero, but also because it’s a lecture before students know whether or not they will be in the class. Thus, the lecture following that decision should be the first lecture, and this initial lecture is the zeroth lecture. ↩︎
