Final Project

In the works...

10/9/2026 Electronics Design

  • This week I will be designing an electronics board that aligns with the components I expect my final project to have. Specifically: input devices like an accelerometer (detecting x, y, z motion), and IMU (detecting roll, pitch, yaw), output devices like a vibrating motor, a screen display (OLED or e-ink?), and considering how to make things not tiny but decently small.

10/1/2026 Ideating with Anthony

After meeting with Anthony, I have gotten a bit more inspiration on my two ideas that I was thinking of pursuing. He particularly suggested I take a look into a previous student’s final project, Hannah Field. It was empowering to learn that there is a precedent for this, and I think this project has enough of a big jump of skills that I would still learn a ton from it. And I think it would be super motivating to work on something personal to myself!

Here’s the plan: spiral development. Each week, work on something that contributes to your final project. For example,

  • 3D Printing: Consider the form factor. Snap fit box?
  • Output devices: Engineer something that vibrates.
  • Networking: Consider how you could link together the different components.
  • PCB Design and Creation: Design the electronics of the system.

09/27/2026 Further Brainstorm and … Complete Overhaul?

After talking with some of my friends and in particular, an instructor of mine whom I adore, I’m thinking of scrapping the previous idea and going forward with a Bananagrams verifier board. Specifically, I think this could be interesting if I could make an extendable board, and hook it up to the online Scrabble dictionary. I think it could also be funny because you could totally prank your friends into thinking a word is not a valid word…

In the works in the brain. More documentation incoming.

09/20/2026 Initial Brainstorm and Design

The HTMAA final projects in my head have appeared daunting and intimidating.

Brainstorm

I am starting by thinking of things I love and would be interested in building off of.

  • Kindle/e-reader/e-ink
  • Bike safety
  • Writing
  • Cooking companion
  • Skin flare up management
  • Diet tracker/macro counter
  • Bananagrams verifier

I want to learn in this class the following things that will be a component of my final project:

  • Robotics
  • Electronics + hardware

Initial idea

My initial idea is motivated mainly because I’ve been thinking a lot about my chronic illness, severe atopic dermatitis, and how my dermatologist told me that I should log how often I scratch myself. This is also inspired by a classmate’s work, Elaine Liu, of a skin-picking prediction device.

Sketch

I started by doing a sketch of what form this could take. iPad initial week drawing My idea here is to essentially make a handchain jewelry inspired by an Oura ring and a smartwatch together. The functionality of it could either log your rate at which you scratch, or be like Pavlok where it reminds you not to scratch if it detects or predicts that you are about to scratch.

CADding

I am a beginner at CAD. Right now I have this draft, which doesn’t look at all like what I sketched out or have in mind. Initial CAD attempt for final project on 09/20/2026

I’m currently struggling with how to move items within Fusion. I’m approaching this right now after having done the CADding for the laser cutter project, and I’m feeling a little bit more experienced but also not at all at the same time. I will have to give the design a lot more thought… more drafts of CAD to come.
